I truly admire your genuine writing talent. It comes from the inside, as it expresses what is important on your own inner scorecard.

I love what you have written, and will follow your advice.

Thanks for being here, Hisham and for your kind words. I'm also writing as a note to self.

VERY thought provoking - thanks for writing about this. I've never tuned into the the words 'inner scorecard' before. Am now! But also tuning into the things happening in my day today that I love and the things I could (happily) let go of. Certainly allowing my afternoon to have this filter turned on for the rest of the afternoon.

I'm glad this one spoke to you, CiarΓ‘n. Do you think things are any different for your girls as they navigate the school etc?

Yes, so true about how westerners are often raised with competition and making judgments quickly based on surface appearances. My inner scorecard has been reworked in the past decade. I set my goals and measure my own progress against what I hoped to do, thought I could do, realized I could do, and did.

Thanks for sharing your story, Virginia.

Was there a defining moment you can recall when you became ready to make the shift or was it gradual?

I would say the defining moment came over the 3 years I worked on my memoir, Grace Interlaced. I had more primary sources than I ever expected because the events in that story happened when I was 12, but my mother saved everything from the fire reports to doctor exams, baby teeth to elastic-busted swimsuits. When she passed and I found all the items in a beat-up black suitcase, I knew I could write the story. The book came out in 2023. Other than that, I would say another defining moment that really settled my mind and heart was in reading Desmond Tutu's book on Forgiveness.

Oh wow! What a gift to find those things, Virginia - a nudge from the universe that your story was meant to be told.

I haven't read Tutu's book.

Desmond Tutu wrote it with his daughter, Mpho Tutu. I took my time reading it and mulling over the valuable insights on forgiveness.
